About

In June 2019, Islington School Improvement Services began a one-year project with BFI Education to support Year 3&4 teachers to enhance pupils’ literacy by working with film. The project began with a day’s introduction to how BFI works with short film, by working with a short called Le Pain et la Rue by renowned (and late) film-maker Abbas Kiarostami. The 12 schools planned some teaching activity which they took away and tried out either at the end of the summer term or the beginning of the Autumn term, 2019.

The plan was to bring the schools back together regularly to review progress, share practice, develop new teaching approaches, and watch new films. These meetings were slated to happen at termly twilight meetings, in October, March, and June. In addition, the schools were given resource to cover teacher time – 2 days in the Autumn, a day in Spring, and a day in Summer. Teachers would be able to gather evidence of progress from pupils’ work, plan further teaching, and observe lessons in each others’ schools.
